Marcus Rashford makes Man Utd comeback after 611 days in Amorim reunion

Marcus Rashford has completed his Manchester United comeback after making his first appearance for the club in 611 days during Saturday’s 4-2 defeat to AC Milan.

The 28-year-old was introduced from the bench in Wrocław as Michael Carrick handed him his first United minutes since December 2024.

It completed a remarkable turnaround for a player whose Old Trafford career appeared to be over following loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona.

Marcus Rashford makes long-awaited Man Utd return

Rashford’s last United appearance came against Viktoria Plzen in December 2024 before his relationship with then-head coach Ruben Amorim deteriorated.

He subsequently left for Villa before spending last season with Barcelona, only returning to Manchester this summer after the Spanish champions decided against making his move permanent.

Saturday therefore provided a particularly unusual setting for his comeback.

Amorim was standing in the opposite dugout as AC Milan manager when Rashford finally returned to action for United.

talkSPORT reported that Rashford came off the bench wearing the No.9 shirt in Poland, despite being expected to wear No.14 during the new campaign.

His appearance itself was more important than the temporary number.

Only a few weeks ago, Rashford’s future remained uncertain. ReadManUtd covered Andy Mitten’s claim that there was now an “80% chance” of him playing for United again, a dramatic increase from where the situation stood earlier this year.

That prediction has now become reality.

Rashford was unable to change the outcome against Milan, with United ending pre-season with a disappointing defeat, but Carrick now has another experienced attacking option available before the Premier League campaign begins.

What happens beyond that remains less certain.

United have considerable competition across the forward line and Rashford will have to earn his place after such a long absence.

Simply getting back onto the pitch, however, represents the biggest step yet in a comeback few would have predicted when he left Old Trafford more than 18 months ago.
