Ederson breaks silence on failed Manchester United move

Ederson has admitted he still doesn’t know why his proposed move to Manchester United collapsed this summer, despite the transfer appearing almost certain at one stage.

The Atalanta midfielder was expected to join Manchester United for a reported £38 million deal in June. However, the move fell apart after United raised concerns over his knee following his medical.

Ederson has since returned to Italy and signed a new contract until June 2031 with Atalanta.

Ederson surprised by United transfer collapse

The Brazil international says he was left confused by how the situation unfolded.

“I honestly don’t know what happened,” Ederson told Sky Italia. “I always had interest from other clubs, and I could have gone to another English side.”

The midfielder insisted the medical itself went well, making United’s decision even harder for him to understand.

“The tests went well, I don’t know what changed. I’ve been with Atalanta for four years and always played.”

Ederson could have waited for another opportunity after the United deal fell through, but his relationship with Atalanta played a major part in his decision to stay.

“I could have just waited to see what happened, but the great rapport with the club convinced me to stay and sign a new contract.”

Since United abandoned the move, Michael Carrick’s side have taken a different route in midfield. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have both arrived, while Carlos Baleba is also closing in on a move from Brighton.

The 27-year-old has spent four seasons with Atalanta, making 182 appearances and scoring 16 goals. He was also part of the side that won the Europa League in the 2023/24 campaign.
