Ederson breaks silence on failed £39m Man Utd transfer

Ederson has spoken publicly for the first time about his collapsed move to Manchester United and admitted he still does not understand why the transfer fell apart.

United appeared set to sign the Atalanta midfielder earlier this summer after reaching an agreement worth around £39million.

The Brazil international subsequently underwent medical checks, but United ultimately decided not to proceed with the transfer after concerns were raised during the process.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Ederson has now revealed his confusion over what happened.

“I honestly don’t know what happened,” he said.

The midfielder added that the tests “went well” from his perspective and confirmed he had wanted to make the move to Old Trafford.

Ederson questions failed Man Utd transfer

United’s decision represented one of the more surprising moments of Michael Carrick’s summer rebuild.

ReadManUtd reported on 11 July that United had pulled back from the transfer after further medical assessments, despite Atalanta maintaining that Ederson was fit.

The Serie A club subsequently handed the 27-year-old a new long-term contract, effectively ending any prospect of the original deal being revived.

Ederson says Atalanta’s support following the collapse helped convince him to remain in Bergamo.

United, meanwhile, moved quickly in another direction.

Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have since strengthened Carrick’s midfield, while ReadManUtd reported on Wednesday that United are now closing in on Carlos Baleba after submitting a package worth around £65m.

Baleba could ultimately become the defensive midfielder United expected Ederson to be earlier in the summer.

The circumstances surrounding the Brazilian’s failed transfer nevertheless remain intriguing.

United clearly saw enough during their medical process to step away from an agreement that had already reached an advanced stage.

Ederson’s comments now make clear that the player himself still does not entirely understand that decision
