Man Utd confirm Marcus Rashford decision in 23-man Premier League squad

Manchester United have confirmed Marcus Rashford in their Premier League squad for the 2026/27 season, completing another significant step in the forward’s return to Michael Carrick’s plans.

United submitted a 23-man senior list after the summer transfer window closed, leaving two available spaces unused.

Rashford is among the forwards registered alongside Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Joshua Zirkzee and Amad.

The decision comes after Barcelona chose not to activate their £26million option to sign Rashford permanently following his loan spell in Spain.

Sky Sports reported last month that Manchester United planned to fully reintegrate Rashford under Carrick.

He has now survived the transfer window and retained his place in the Premier League squad.

Marcus Rashford gets another chance at Man Utd

Rashford’s situation looked very different earlier in the summer.

United initially hoped a permanent solution could be found after loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, but no deal materialised.

The forward has since returned to first-team involvement and started during the 5-2 victory against Ipswich Town last weekend.

Harry Maguire subsequently backed Rashford to become an important player again if he maintains his current focus.

The decision to register him therefore appears to confirm that Carrick intends to use the England international rather than simply keep him around until another transfer opportunity emerges.

United’s squad announcement also contains several other notable details.

Manuel Ugarte remains registered despite uncertainty surrounding his future during the summer, while Joshua Zirkzee is included after United rejected a late Everton approach.

New midfield signings Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans are all included after United concentrated much of their summer spending in that department.

Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro do not appear on the 23-man senior list, but there is no cause for concern.

Players born on or after 1 January 2005 can be used without taking up one of the senior squad places, meaning both remain eligible for Premier League matches.

Interestingly, United have used only 23 of the maximum 25 senior places.

Patrick Dorgu is listed among the defenders following United’s failure to bring in another left-back before the deadline.

That leaves Carrick working with his existing options after the club failed to land leading target Lewis Hall.

For Rashford, however, the picture is now much clearer.

After spending almost two years away from United’s Premier League starting XI, he has another genuine opportunity to rebuild his Old Trafford career.
