United’s decision not to sign a new left-back has left Luke Shaw as the only recognised senior player in that position after the club failed to sign Lewis Hall.
There was interest in several alternatives during the window, but Lewis Hall was one option the club had considered for longer-term plans.
Luke Shaw remains the only recognised senior left-back. It has been reported that Michael Carrick has to contend with the available options and use Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui as alternatives. Patrick Dorgu has also been used further forward, while Lisandro Martinez and Baleba could provide emergency cover.
Manchester United did explore the market late on. They checked on Rayan Ait-Nouri after the Manchester City defender had been offered to them, but City’s willingness to consider only a loan with a sizeable obligation to buy did not appeal to United.
Newcastle United were unwilling to sell Lewis Hall
The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell has explained why Manchester United didn’t manage to get a deal done for the Newcastle defender. The issue wasn’t simply a lack of interest from Old Trafford.
Newcastle’s stance became firmer after they had already allowed several important players to leave. Having sold Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, the club didn’t want to lose another key member of their squad.
Whitwell explained that Newcastle United had little reason to raise money through another major sale. Amid growing fan bashing, Hall’s departure to a Premier League rival would have been even harder to accept.
Timing also worked against Manchester United. A move earlier in the window could potentially have been different, but United were still working through their midfield priorities when Newcastle’s position hardened on Lewis Hall.
Manchester United haven’t completely walked away from the idea of signing Hall. The expectation is that his situation could be looked at again next summer.
