Luke Shaw was one of Manchester United’s better players in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Everton, earning praise from former teammates Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young after a lively display on the left.
The defender was involved going forward and assisted Benjamin Sesko‘s late goal from his cross. His delivery from the left gave United the lead that looked set to clinch all three points before Maitland-Niles scored a late leveller.
Rooney and Young impressed by Luke Shaw
“He was really good,” former United striker Wayne Rooney said on Match of the Day.
“Defensively he was leading and he was good going forward as well. He looked more of a threat in his connection with Marcus [Rashford].”
That link with Marcus Rashford was also noticed by Michael Carrick. The United manager was pleased with the understanding between the pair, although there was concern when Rashford came off in the second half after feeling “something”.
“Marcus and Luke were particularly dangerous down that side,” Carrick said.
“They’ve played together for quite some time now and have an understanding. We’re trying to build partnerships and combinations throughout the team.”
Young was reminded of an earlier version of Luke Shaw when watching him against Everton.
“It was great to see that left side and the connection they have had for years; it was like Luke Shaw when he first came to the club,” the former United winger said.
“He goes so quick, overlaps and gets balls into the box, gets the defence on the back foot.”
Luke Shaw has started every Premier League game for United since the beginning of last season, and this performance offered another positive sign from the left-back amid scrutiny.
