Manchester United have reportedly made contact over a possible deal for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde as Michael Carrick continues to look for another option in the position.
The 22-year-old is now being considered by Manchester United after Jorge Mendes, his representative, was approached to find out the conditions of a potential transfer. Reports in Spain suggest the Reds have shown the most interest in Balde, although the player’s preference is still to remain at Barcelona.
That could change, however, with his position at the Catalan club becoming less straightforward.
Balde faces uncertain role at Barcelona amid United interest
Balde came through Barcelona’s academy and would rather stay at the club, but his situation has changed following Joao Cancelo’s permanent return.
Cancelo spent last season on loan at Barcelona before making the move permanent. He is now expected to be ahead of Balde in the pecking order, leaving the young defender with a decision to make.
Spanish newspapers Sport, AS and Mundo Deportivo have all reported on the situation and Manchester United’s interest.
Jorge Mendes has informed Balde about United’s approach, with the player now having to decide whether he is better off remaining at Barcelona or considering a move elsewhere.
The reports claim that Balde’s desire to stay is being tested by the situation at the club and the offers available to him.
For United, that could create an opening at a position Carrick has already identified as one that needs attention.
Shaw struggles add to United’s need
United’s defeat to Hull City on the opening weekend only made the argument for another left-back stronger.
Luke Shaw started at the MKM Stadium but came in for heavy criticism after the 2-0 loss. Wayne Rooney was particularly unhappy with his positioning for one of Hull’s goals.
“This is schoolboy defending from Luke Shaw,” Rooney said about Luke Shaw.
The former United striker felt Shaw had dropped too far behind the rest of the defensive line, allowing Hull to take advantage.
“Man United had a good line, Hull would have been waiting for this all day, Luke Shaw drops in, he’s five yards behind his back line and if the ball is good enough, which it was, it’s impossible to stop.”
Luke Shaw remains an experienced player, but United can’t afford to leave the position without proper competition over a long season.
With Balde, there is still a major obstacle. He wants to stay at Barcelona and United have not yet made a direct offer for the defender.
After the Hull defeat, Carrick may have even more reason to push for another left-back. Balde could now be one of the most interesting options available.
