Matheus Cunha rescued a point for Manchester United with a late deflected goal as Michael Carrick’s side drew 1-1 with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Manchester United looked set to suffer a third straight defeat after Lisandro Martinez turned the ball into his own net early in the second half. However, Matheus Cunha produced a much-needed moment with just a minute of normal time remaining.
The Brazilian’s 20-yard effort took a huge deflection off Fulham defender David Affengruber, sending goalkeeper Bernd Leno the wrong way and finding the corner.
Leno had been one of Fulham’s best players throughout the afternoon, making several important saves as United pushed for an equaliser. The late goal was harsh on the German, but United had done enough after falling behind to earn something from the game.
United finally find a response at Fulham
The visitors had looked the more dangerous side at points during the first half. Bruno Fernandes went closest to breaking the deadlock when his effort from Cunha’s cutback struck the post.
Fulham responded with a spell of pressure of their own, with Josh King and Oscar Bobb both coming close. Cunha also went close from distance when another deflected effort looped over Leno before hitting the post.
Marcus Rashford then missed a good chance before the break.
The second half initially offered little, but things changed after Martinez’s own goal. United took control and Leno was forced into saves to deny Bryan Mbeumo and Cunha.
Eventually, Cunha’s deflected strike gave United the response they needed.
The draw leaves United 12th with five points from five games heading into the international break, while Fulham remain 19th with two points.
