Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been ruled out of Portugal’s Nations League clash with Norway after picking up an injury in the win over Wales.
Bruno Fernandes played almost the full match against Wales earlier this week, but Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed the midfielder would not be risked in Sunday’s fixture.
Jesus revealed Fernandes has been carrying pain in recent games and admitted the issue affected his performance against Wales.
“The [Fernandes] case involves treatment and recovery time. He’s coming off an injury at United, and he told me he’s been playing with that pain for the last three games, which is hindering him,” Jesus said as quoted by Manchester Evening News.
He added that Fernandes was not performing at his best against Wales and that Portugal would rather avoid taking another risk with the midfielder.
“I prefer not to risk it in this game so he’s fully fit for the Denmark match,” Jesus said.
Manchester United monitoring several injury concerns
Fernandes is not expected to be sidelined for Manchester United unless the problem becomes more serious, with comments from Jesus suggesting he could return for Portugal’s next match.
The club are already dealing with several fitness issues. Benjamin Sesko missed international duty with Slovenia after suffering another setback in his recovery from a shin problem.
Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo were both selected for England but withdrew from the squad. Rashford had appeared to pick up a problem late in United’s draw with Fulham.
Amad remains another concern after missing the season so far because of an ankle injury. The winger is expected to return to training during the extended domestic break.
