A fresh Bruno Fernandes injury update has emerged after Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus revealed the Manchester United captain has been playing through pain.
Fernandes featured in Portugal’s win over Wales but was withdrawn from consideration for tonight’s match after the medical team identified his issue as one of the main concerns in the squad.
Jesus explained that Bruno Fernandes is dealing with an injury he suffered at Manchester United and has been carrying discomfort through his recent games. The Portugal boss admitted the problem affected the midfielder’s performance against Wales.
“The other case [Fernandes] involves treatment and recovery time. He’s coming off an injury at United, and he told me he’s been playing with that pain for the last three games, which is hindering him,” Jesus said as covered in our previous post.
“It was one of the factors that prevented Bruno from playing at his best against Wales.”
Bruno Fernandes injury concern puts United on alert
Jesus also made it clear that Portugal would rather avoid taking a risk with Fernandes while he continues his recovery.
The update will be closely followed at Manchester United, with Fernandes remaining an important figure in Michael Carrick’s team. The midfielder is both United’s captain and one of their main creative outlets, making his fitness particularly important ahead of the club’s return to action.
Tottenham Hotspur are due to visit Old Trafford on October 10, giving United reason to monitor Fernandes’ recovery carefully during the international break.
Portugal’s decision to protect United’s captain provides some relief, although the full extent of the problem remains unclear. Fernandes has already admitted to playing through pain in recent matches, making his recovery one of the key fitness stories surrounding United.
