Manchester United are continuing to manage Bruno Fernandes’ fitness after the captain took several heavy blows during the Champions League victory over Sabah earlier this month.
Bruno Fernandes was seen limping away from Old Trafford following the 4-0 win, and the club have since remained in contact with Portugal over his condition during the international break, as per Tyrone Marshall of Manchester Evening News.
The midfielder featured for 89 minutes in Portugal’s victory over Wales, but was then left out of the squad that beat Norway. Fernandes remains with Jorge Jesus’ squad, though, with Portugal preparing for further Nations League fixtures.
Bruno Fernandes injury being closely monitored
Fernandes is expected to remain with Portugal for Thursday’s meeting with Denmark before the return fixture against Norway on Sunday.
The decision to keep the Manchester United captain involved comes after he managed almost the full match against Wales despite the concerns surrounding his fitness.
Manchester United have been monitoring the situation and have maintained communication with the Portugal camp during the international window. His absence from the Norway victory provided Fernandes with an opportunity to recover before potentially returning to action.
The issue dates back to the Champions League meeting with Sabah, when Fernandes received a couple of heavy blows during the match. His limp after the final whistle added to concerns over his condition.
For Manchester United, the priority will be ensuring their captain returns to full fitness rather than taking unnecessary risks with his availability.
Fernandes remains with Portugal for the remainder of the international break, meaning United will continue to monitor his progress before he heads back to club duty.
