Van Gaal to make Benteke enquiry?

Although it has been heavily suggested that either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur are the favourites to land Belgian hitman Christian Benteke, TalkSPORT have suggested in an ‘exclusive’ that United have been sniffing around.

It is thought that as well as Radamel Falcao having departed Old Trafford following a largely unsuccessful loan spell in 2014/15, Robin van Persie and Nani will also be shown the exit door, leaving Louis van Gaal with only Wayne Rooney and James Wilson as striking options – and the manager made it clear upon arrival at the club that he wants 4 strikers to choose from in his squad.

Christian Benteke would certainly be a welcome addition at United as he is a proven Premier League and international-level player. However, his release clause of £32.5 million is said by TalkSPORT to have put United off slightly, although an enquiry over a cut-price deal, possibly involving United players moving the other way at least temporarily, could be made.

To sign Benteke would be to deprive Liverpool and Spurs of an excellent finisher who could certainly affect the race for top 4 at least, therefore if Ed Woodward can find a way to bring him to Old Trafford for a cheaper price than the current valuation, it would be a very shrewd transfer.

Sky Sports reported on Monday afternoon that Aston Villa had received no official bids for their Belgian hitman and are hopeful that he will be staying at Villa Park for the upcoming season.
