Manchester United decision to bring Scott McTominay back made

Scott McTominay has been linked with a return to Manchester United ever since reports of Napoli not offering a new deal over financial concerns.

The Scotland international, who turns 30 in December, recently underwent a minor procedure to correct irregular heart rhythms. He is expected to return to action soon, but that has not changed the likelihood of a reunion with Manchester United.

McTominay left United for Napoli in 2024 and has gone from strength to strength in Italy. His first season was particularly impressive as he scored 12 Serie A goals and provided six assists while helping Napoli win the league. He followed that with another 10 league goals and three assists last season.

He also won the Serie A MVP award in his first campaign and remains a key player for Napoli.

Why Scott McTominay does not fit Manchester United’s plans

The issue for United is less about McTominay’s ability and more about the profile of midfielder they are looking to sign.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, Pete O’Rourke said:

“I would say it’s unlikely that he returns to Manchester United. He is 29 now, and is turning 30 in December, so is coming to the latter stages of his career.

“He’s had a great time in Italy. He’s been amazing for Napoli, helping them win the league two seasons ago, and obviously he’s been a proven performer for Scotland as well.”

Napoli are reportedly reluctant to offer the kind of wages McTominay would want as he approaches his 30s. The Italian club is believed to value him at between € 25 million and € 30 million. His contract faces a major hurdle as his salary could still prove a stumbling block for any potential suitors.

McTominay’s agent still has strong Premier League connections and has held talks with several clubs, including United. Aston Villa were also understood to have approached the midfielder during the summer.

What happens to McTominay’s contract is yet to be finalized, but Manchester United are not re-signing the Scottish international.
