Ashley Young has emerged as a shock candidate for Tottenham Hotspur, according to Dave Kidd of The Mirror.
The interest in the now 30 year-old winger comes as Yannick Bolasie has been deemed too expensive to invest in by the North London club, as Crystal Palace have stuck a £25 million price tag on their star man from last season.
Speaking of star men, Young was one of United’s best performers in 2015/16, really stepping up his game under Louis van Gaal, whose philosophy clearly rewards hard-working, consistent players. The highlight of Young’s season was probably his 89th minute winner away to Newcastle, after his side had spent the entire game struggling for a meaningful breakthrough.
Ex-Watford and Aston Villa winger Young will not want to leave United as they re-enter the Champions League and have strengthened enough that they could be genuine title contenders this term. However, he is yet to agree a new deal at Old Trafford, which could see him leave for less if he is to depart before a new contract is signed.
Louis van Gaal has previously spoken highly of Young, too, so will likely want to keep hold of the experienced winger. He was joyous last week in announcing the British media that he had fulfilled his criteria of having two players available for each position – which will include Ashley Young as a left-midfielder or winger.
Another reason a deal may be difficult for Spurs to push through is that Young’s £110,000 wage packet would be deemed to expensive for the London side so he would have to take a pay cut.
Good friends with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini and Chris Smalling, it is fair to say that Young has more reasons to stay than he does to go and the club will likely keep hold of their man if a bid is to come in from Tottenham Hotspur
