United and Chelsea battle for Tielemans

Manchester United and Chelsea are battling for the signature of Anderlecht’s Youri Tielemans, according to Goal.

The 18-year old midfielder is one of Europe’s hottest football prospects, making his Champions League debut at the age of 16, and has already established himself as a vital part of the Anderlecht side.

He has made 95 appearances for Anderlecht, scoring 13 goals and assisting 13 goals – a remarkable return considering his tender years. His vision is his greatest asset, consistently showing the ability to play a defence-splitting pass when given time and space.

Tielemans, who can play in defensive midfield and attacking midfield, has been named the best young player in Belgium for the past two years, and has got off to a flying start this season, scoring three goals in seven appearances so far.

As per Goal, third party discussions were held in London last week with representatives from both United and Chelsea present in regards to a move for Tielemans next summer.

And United believe they are favourites for Tielemans’ signature, with the Reds keen on a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick. Despite interest from clubs across Europe, the Belgian under-21 international is keen to play in the Premier League.

United have scouted Tielemans on a number of occasions in the past, and sources close to the player indicate that playing time will be a key consideration in his decision.

The Reds have bought some of the best young talents in football over the past few years, with Luke Shaw, Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial all making the move to Old Trafford, and Louis van Gaal’s willingness to put his faith in youth may just give United the edge in this transfer battle.
