Manchester United may be trying to secure Benfica midfielder Renato Sanches in this window – but they could lose a central midfielder in the process.
The Red Devils’ bitter rivals Manchester City have just confirmed that Pep Guardiola will be their manager for 2016/17; and according to Don Balon in Spain, the Catalan manager wants to bring Ander Herrera to the Etihad Stadium.
The move would likely spark a riot from Manchester United fans, as Herrera, who is yet to make a senior appearance for the Spanish national team, is a fan-favourite and considered one of their best creative players.
Herrera, who was part of an Athletic Club side who tore their way through Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in the Europa League in 2012, winning 5-3 on aggregate, signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2014.
The little Spaniard has held down the central-attacking midfield role for a run of games now and provides a spark in the final third with his precise passing and clinical shooting ability. He is a tenacious and lively midfielder who would fit in at any of Europe’s top clubs; so for United to lose him to their bitter rivals would be a hammer blow.
