Giggs linked with Bolton manager’s role

Ryan Giggs has been linked with the Bolton Wanderers manager’s vacancy and is now the bookies’ favourite for the role, according to the Bolton News.

The Welshman has a year left on his contract at Old Trafford as part of the club’s coaching staff having been Louis van Gaal’s assistant manager under the previous regime.

However, with Van Gaal and fellow staff members Albert Stuivenburg and Frans Hoek having now left the club, Giggs’ future is yet to be resolved, although it seems he will not continue in his role as assistant to new boss Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho is expected to bring in his trusted number two, Rui Faria, as his assistant manager, meaning Giggs would either have to change his role in the coaching staff or look for work elsewhere.

It was reported earlier this week by Sky Sports that Giggs would choose the latter option and leave United because of his desire to become a manager.

Bolton have been without a manager since March when Neil Lennon was sacked, although that departure did not affect the Trotters’ fight against relegation as they finished bottom of the Championship last season.

Should Giggs become boss at the Macron Stadium, it would be his first permanent role as a manager although he did serve as caretaker boss at United for four matches after David Moyes was sacked in 2014.

A departure for Giggs would signal the end of a 26-year association with United, in which he appeared 963 times for the Reds – more than any other player in the club’s history.
