Manchester United may offer defender Marcos Rojo to Southampton in an attempt to sign Saints captain José Fonte, according to the Mirror.
It is known that José Mourinho wants to add an experienced leader to the United backline and Fonte fits the bill perfectly. The Saints skipper has plenty of Premier League experience and his stock has risen having played a pivotal role in Portugal’s Euro 2016 victory earlier this summer.
United face competition for the 32-year-old Portuguese international, with reports indicating that Arsenal have joined the race for his signature, having put in an approach in the last couple of days.
Southampton may also be able to tie Fonte down to a new contract, with the club hopeful that he will accept an improved offer that would make him the highest-paid player at St Mary’s.

However, the Saints could be enticed into doing a deal with the inclusion of Argentina international Rojo in exchange for Fonte.
The 26-year-old can play at both centre-back and at left-back, meaning his versatility could prove to be an attractive prospect for Saints if they are to make a move for the Argentinian.
Rojo joined United in a £16 million move from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2014, but has so far failed to cement a first-team place in the United side, having suffered a number of injuries while having an extended run in the starting eleven under Louis van Gaal.
It seems that Mourinho is open to selling the Argentinian international, with Rojo having been an unused sub when United started their Premier League season with a win against Bournemouth on Sunday.
