Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Andrea Medina, giving Marc Skinner an immediate defensive addition at the start of July.
United announced Medina’s arrival on Wednesday, with the Spanish defender joining from Atletico Madrid. The club have also confirmed that she will wear the No.6 shirt, underlining her status as a first-team squad addition rather than a long-term academy project.
That matters for Skinner because this move strengthens the left side of United’s defence at the right moment. Medina arrives just after Hannah Blundell’s departure from Manchester United was listed among the club’s related updates, leaving United with a clear need for reliable defensive depth.
Medina Arrival Strengthens Skinner’s Defensive Options
Medina leaves Atletico with a strong senior base behind her. United describe the 22-year-old as a versatile young defender who represented Atletico for four seasons, won the Copa de la Reina in 2023 and started all three Champions League fixtures against United last season.
She also brings a useful Spain pathway pedigree. United’s player profile notes that Medina has won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup and two UEFA Under-19 Championship titles with Spain’s youth sides.
For United, the timing is as important as the profile. Medina can operate on the left side of defence, which gives Skinner more flexibility before pre-season and helps the squad prepare for domestic and European demands.
This is the kind of early-window signing United needed: targeted, positionally logical and directly tied to a squad gap. At 22, Medina offers development room, but she also has enough senior football behind her to compete straight away.
