Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt Embarrassingly Agree on Selling Patrick Dorgu

  • Manchester United icons play ‘keep or sell’
  • Patrick Dorgu controversially sold
  • One of several headscratchers

Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt have made some bizarre calls while playing ‘keep or sell’ with Michael Carrick’s squad. The duo have made several questionable comments on their podcast.

Scholes and Butt were part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominant reign at Old Trafford. They know what it takes to become a success and win major trophies.

That’s why it’s a surprise to hear the duo write Dorgu off at such an early stage of his career. Not just that, but the Dane was one of the best performers during Carrick’s start.

Dorgu scored a stunning strike in a 3-2 win over Arsenal at the Emirates before sustaining a long-term hamstring injury. He hasn’t appeared since that game and couldn’t build on that goal, along with one in a 2-0 victory against Manchester City.

United Legends Don’t Get Dorgu

Scholes already stirred up controversy when he boldly claimed that United can’t win a title with Harry Maguire. But his and Butt’s take on Dorgu is just as much of a headscratcher.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt said:

“I don’t know what he is. He does some great games.”

Scholes responded:

“They brought him in as a wing-back. He’s not really played wing-back and he actually done alright the last (games).”

Scholes then gave his verdict:

“Yeah, I’d probably sell.”

Butt agreed:

“Yeah sell.”

Dorgu endured a difficult start at United, unable to impress as a left wing-back in Ruben Amorim’s system. It was tough for any player to shine during one of the worst periods in the club’s history.

The 21-year-old clicked into gear this season and put in some excellent performances. That included in a 1-0 win over Newcastle United in which he bagged the winner at Old Trafford.

Dorgu looked set to be one of Carrick’s most important players until his injury. It’s bemusing to hear two club legends ignore his age, potential, and obvious growth, especially given the lack of options in the positions he can play.

Shocking Sales

Another shock decision made by the United icons was over Leny Yoro. The French youngster has filled in superbly well for Lisandro Martinez during the Argentine’s injury.

Yoro arrived from LOSC Lille in the summer of 2024 for £52m, and the Reds saw off competition from Real Madrid for his signature. While he isn’t quite a starter just yet, he’s obviously set to be a long-term fixture in the backline.

Butt seems to think he should be sent out on loan despite the defence being an issue due to injuries this season:

“He’s just a young centre-back. I’d be putting him out on loan me.”

Scholes went one step further and suggested, based on the current situation, he’d sell the 20-year-old:

“I think there’s something in there. I think he needs a bit of time. But if you had to make a choice now I’d probably sell him.”

The list of players that the pair opted to sell were Noussair Mazraoui, Yoro, Harry Maguire, if Matthijs de Ligt is fit, Luke Shaw (Scholes), Mason Mount, Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, and Joshua Zirkzee.

Butt continued his Benjamin Sesko agenda and insisted that although he’d keep the Slovenian striker, he’d use him as a squad player. Some ridiculous decisions that are more befitting of a FIFA career mode rather than real-life football.
