- David de Gea could return to Premier League
- Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper left club in 2023
- Newcastle want to bring him back to England
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea could soon be back in the Premier League. The Spanish shot-stopper is reportedly on the wishlist of one of the Reds’ rivals.
According to Alan Nixon on his Patreon, Newcastle United are keen to find out whether De Gea wants a return to the English top flight. The Magpies are set to find a new number one amid Nick Pope’s drop in form and the reported decision not to sign Southampton loanee Aaron Ramsdale permanently.
De Gea is a United legend, having spent 12 years at Old Trafford. He made 545 appearances and surpassed Peter Schmeichel as the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in club history (190).
Newcastle Want De Gea
Nixon claims that De Gea is on Newcastle’s shortlist and will be asked if he wants to return to the Premier League. The 35-year-old is currently at Fiorentina, but the Italians are struggling in Serie A.
De Gea left United in controversial fashion after initially agreeing to terms on a new contract on reduced wages. But the club and former manager Erik ten Hag withdrew the proposal, allowing his deal to expire.
Andre Onana arrived as his replacement in the summer of 2023 but the Cameroonian flopped. It’s taken over two years for the club to find the perfect heir in Senne Lammens who has been sensational since arriving from Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp last summer.
De Gea spent a year out of the game after leaving the Reds before deciding to head to Fiorentina. He’s since made 83 appearances, keeping 21 clean sheets and was named their captain this season.
Not an Ideal Move
It would be quite strange to see the Spaniard wearing the shirt of another Premier League club. He is one of the greatest goalkeepers to play for the club, and as such, no fan ideally wants to see him between the sticks at St James’ Park.
But De Gea deserves to make whatever decision that benefits him and his career. The club’s awful approach to handling his contract situation back in 2023 left a sour taste in everybody’s mouths.
Bruno Fernandes even called the higher-ups out for their treatment of his former teammate. He penned a heartfelt message on Instagram about the Spaniard not getting a proper send-off.
That changed last summer when United played Fiorentina in a pre-season friendly at Old Trafford. He was given a huge reception by supporters, who made it clear he’s still a hero at the Theatre of Dreams.
