- Manchester United’s need for midfield resources
- Red Devils bidding plan for Koopmeiners and Matic comparison
- Is the deal worth it?
Manchester United have been in a constant search for midfield solutions and their next target is a Serie A player, donning the Juventus colours.
United are keen to bring in midfield reinforcements this summer ahead of Casemiro’s departure. Manuel Ugarte’s dissapointing spell could end with a move to Serie A a possibility.
INEOS appear to have added Juve’s Teun Koopmeiners to their wishlist, according to Italian outlet Tuttosport (via Sports Witness). The Dutch midfielder had considered a Premier League move before joining the Turin side.
Man Utd plan to bid for Koopmeiners
United are reportedly set to approach Juve for the 28-year-old. The Dutch player joined the Bianconeri from Atalanta in 2024, meaning his contract doesn’t expire until 2029.
Koopmeiners’ style has always been compared to that of former Red Devil Nemanja Matic. Since his early days at AZ Alkmaar, his ball-winning ability, solid presence, and excellent distribution have shown the Serbian in him.
United aren’t the only ones interested in Koopmeiners. TEAMtalk reports that Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray are also eyeing the Netherlands international.
The Serie A giants are thought to be open to selling the 28-year-old midfielder for €30 million (£26.1m). This is a reasonable fee which would allow the club to make further additions in the middle of the park.
The Dutchman could serve as a backup to Bruno Fernandes. He is effective in and around the box and shooting from range, but it’s a big ask for him to become the Portuguese playmaker’s direct replacement.
Uncertainty Over Koopmeiners
There are some factors to consider if United intend to pursue the Juventus midfielder. Over the past two seasons, he has failed to make a lasting impression for the Serie A side. During his Atalanta days, he played in a man-for-man system, bringing out the best in Koopmeiners.
Although at Juve, the midfielder has never found his best position. Under Luciano Spalletti, he enjoyed a resurgence, thriving as a left centre-back in a back three.
Yet, that did not go as planned, and the Italian moved him back to midfield. But he was benched in two of the three Serie A games. The ball is in INEOS’ court, and the decision is theirs to make.
