- Manchester United set to reduce wage bill this summer
- Mason Mount at risk of exodus
- Coventry City interested in midfielder
As the summer transfer window approaches, fringe players at Manchester United face a nervous wait over their futures at Old Trafford.
For some players like Manuel Ugarte and Tyrell Malacia, the writing has been on the wall for some time now. However for others, like Mason Mount, there is a degree of uncertainty as to whether they will remain under the care of the new permanent head coach – whoever that may be.
So far, Michael Carrick seems the most likely to land the role. That hardly spells good news for Mount, who has been restricted to minimal gametime under the 44-year-old up until now.

Coventry City Plot Mount Move
According to Si Phillips via Football League World, Frank Lampard has identified Mount as his primary target for Coventry City. The Sky Blues will be playing Premier League football for the first time since 2000/01 under the Chelsea legend. A move for Mount would see Lampard reunite with a player that he mentored at Derby County, and later at Chelsea.
The midfielder has struggled for gametime due to injuries and selection issues. Mount has missed six out of thirteen games under Carrick, playing just 26 minutes of football under him. However, he did feature from the bench against Brentford. From his 20 Premier League appearances this season, the 27 year-old has only started half of those games.
Coventry will tempt Mount with the promise of being the main man in the side’s first season back in the top flight. The former Chelsea man’s high wages would be the biggest barrier. However, Lampard’s personal relationship with the player is seen as the wildcard that could make the deal a reality.
Mount’s Consistency Struggles
Mount was one of the players who was highly rated by Ruben Amorim. His departure, as well as persistent injuries, have severely limited his chances in 2025/26. Despite his bit-part role under Carrick, that has not stopped Mount from endorsing the former midfielder for the permanent job.
The 27-year-old has not played badly when he has stepped onto the pitch for United, but there has hardly been any payback for the £55m that the club spent on him a few seasons ago. The Reds will feel that there is still some value in him, and selling him on the cheap will hardly be considered.
The player has a contract until 2028, so United under INEOS will not be rushed to sell. However, he does earn £150,000 a week, which places him in the second tier of earners at the club next to the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Bryan Mbuemo and Luke Shaw. In comparison, all of those players have consistently been available to play for the team this season. In the season of cost-cutting, Mount may find himself on the market if Coventry are seriously interested in whisking him away from Old Trafford.
