- Manchester United face Liverpool on Sunday
- Michael Carrick has given an update on Matheus Cunha
- Brazilian missed win over Brentford
Michael Carrick is unsure whether Matheus Cunha will be ready for Manchester United‘s clash with Liverpool on Sunday (May 3rd). The Brazilian attacker missed a 2-1 win over Brentford on Monday night.
Cunha was ruled out of the victory at Old Trafford against the Bees due to a sore hip flexor. He’d been a mainstay in Carrick’s team beforehand, scoring the winner in a 1-0 win against Chelsea the week prior.
The 26-year-old has been in fine form since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January. He’s posted four goals and three assists in 12 games.

“We’re hopeful” – Carrick on Cunha
Cunha has been back in training but Carrick couldn’t confirm whether he’d be fit to face Liverpool. He told reporters in his pre-match press conference:
“We’re in good shape really. Matheus has done a little bit of work, so we’re hopeful. We’re not sure but we’re hopeful.”
Carrick also gave an update on Matthijs de Ligt who has been sidelined since December with a back injury. He said:
“Matta is still a little bit further [off] and not involved in the game. But, other than that, we’re in good shape.”
Patrick Dorgu returned from a hamstring injury and made the squad for the win against Brentford. The Dane was kept on the bench but could get a start if Cunha isn’t fit to either start or play the game.
United will be without Lisandro Martinez who serves the third of a three-match suspension after his sending off in a 2-1 loss to Leeds United last month. But other than that the Red Devils have no other injury concerns.
Much to Ponder for Carrick
Carrick started Amad on the left wing in United’s win over Brentford on Monday. The Ivorian hasn’t quite found the form he enjoyed at the start of the season since returning from the African Cup of Nations.
With Dorgu now back from his lengthy spell on the sidelines, it gives Carrick an option at left wing should Cunha not be available. The Dane actually started over the Brazilian when the English coach first took charge.
Dorgu started and scored in wins over Manchester City (2-0) and Arsenal (3-2). He might not be ready for 90 minutes so it could be the case of Amad continuing as on the left.
