- Manchester United eye Mateus Fernandes
- The West Ham midfielder likely to be sold if relegated
- Portuguese is thriving this season
Manchester United have reportedly been handed a golden opportunity to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The Portuguese is one of several midfield targets on the club’s shortlist.
United have decided to make a summer move for Fernandes as a second priority in their midfield overhaul. The midfielder has been one of the only bright sparks in West Ham’s difficult campaign.
With the Red Devils having watched the player most of this season, they seem to have made their choice clear. The East London outfit wants him to stay, but fears of relegation are forcing them to think otherwise, as the Portuguese wishes to leave.
United Renewing Interest in Mateus Fernandes
According to The Telegraph, United are very keen on signing the midfielder and could be handed a boost, as West Ham will readily sell if they are relegated. The Reds decided against an approach for the 21-year-old last summer, which allowed the Hammers to swoop in with a £38 million deal from Southampton.
The Portuguese recently earned his first international cap, and manager Roberto Martinez described him as “incredible”. Having played 32 times for the Hammers, he bagged three goals and three assists.
Mateus Fernandes could be a perfect fit for the number eight role and could give Kobbie Mainoo stiff competition. Additionally, he operates as a holding midfielder, which could help control possession and deal with Casemiro’s departure.
Having just broken into the senior Portuguese team, the former Sporting CP youngster is considered one of the Premier League’s most exciting and versatile talents. This is a sign that United should act fast, as multiple clubs have been monitoring him as well.
United’s midfield saga could be nearing its end
United’s plan to build a deeper squad ahead of the Champions League is slowly taking shape. With Casemiro departing as a free agent and Manuel Ugarte added to the transfer list, the club would recoup funds to reshape its midfield profile.
Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Joao Gomes, Alex Scott, and Aurelien Tchouameni are also in the wishlist along with the Portuguese. Mainoo has signed a new long-term deal, which makes him part of the future project.
United are looking to reinforce their midfield with at least two new signings. This could include a search for a long-term successor for Bruno Fernandes. With no release clause in the captain’s current deal, uncertainty continues to surround his long-term future.
