- Manchester United hold talks with Castello Lukeba’s camp
- Number of European clubs interested in Frenchman
- Leipzig open to fee below 80m release clause
The main recruitment strategy at Manchester United seems to be fine-tuned to look at young players with high ceilings.
Having successfully secured Benjamin Sesko last summer, the Red Devils seem intent on returning to the Red Bull Arena for a second consecutive year. The Slovenian’s solid debut season has left an impressive mark on the INEOS hierarchy.
It is no coincidence that the director of recruitment is Christopher Vivell, who was a key man in the Red Bull network between 2015 and 2022. The latest name that the Reds are interested in currently plays in Germany and for familiarity’s sake, is a former teammate of Sesko’s.

United Hold Talks with Lukeba Camp
According to the latest update by Football Transfers via Caught Offside, Manchester United have become “frontrunners” to sign RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba. The Reds have reportedly “earmarked” Lukeba “as the club’s primary defensive target” for the upcoming summer window.
Football Transfers’ sources claim that United “have already initiated talks with Lukeba’s representatives”, ahead of other clubs being interested. In recent weeks, a number of clubs such as Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have been linked with the star.
Reports last month suggested that Leipzig are open to discussing a fee under the €80m release clause currently in the player’s contract.
Much like the battle for signing two midfielders, INEOS are looking to secure signings before the start of the World Cup, which could inflate prices. However, Lukeba is the exception in the matter. He is unlikely to be included in Didier Deschamps’ France squad. The 23-year-old’s last senior call-up was in October 2023.

Signing Lukeba Has Repercussions for United Defenders
One of the interesting talking points in the latest Talk of the Devils podcast was about Lisandro Martinez’s future. The 28-year-old has two years remaining on his contract as of this summer, which leaves United at a crossroads if they do go in for Lukeba.
Journalist Andy Mitten even noted that United must assess whether to “keep or sell” the Argentinian. The defender’s value will decrease if the club delay the decision until next summer, with one year left on his current deal by then.
Ayden Heaven’s recent breakthrough with the team is also a consideration. The 19 year-old has impressed against some big clubs in the Premier League in Martinez’s absence. INEOS’ future vision for Heaven and Yoro to lead the backline is on the right trajectory.
If Lukeba is signed, United would be prioritising a player who could disrupt that, as the Frenchman is only 23 years old. However, the Reds need quality depth for next season’s participation in the Champions League. Beyond that, ‘Project 150’ which includes United winning the Premier League title is approaching fast. To do that, the defence that is conceding way too many goals needs to be stabilised.
