Marcus Rashford will rue missing out on Man Utd’s Michael Carrick era

  • Man Utd loanee Marcus Rashford insists on Barcelona move
  • La Liga giants still yet to decide on £26m buy option
  • Michael Carrick ideal for Rashford

Marcus Rashford has spent the season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United and he wants to make the move permanent. The English forward left Old Trafford in disarray after falling out with former head coach Ruben Amorim.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Rashford wants to stay at Barca “at all costs.” This is despite Michael Carrick’s appointment as permanent head coach.

Rashford will know that Carrick would place his faith in him but that seemingly hasn’t changed his mind. He fully intends to stay at Camp Nou where he’s played an important role in their La Liga title-winning season.

Carrick doesn’t turn Rashford’s head

United clearly wanted to offload Rashford, even despite Amorim taking a dislike to the player. His £300,000 per week wages were giving INEOS a headache, and his performances didn’t warrant such a salary.

The 28-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa before then heading back out on loan to Barca last summer. A £26m buy option was included in the deal, but the La Liga giants are weighing up paying that fee.

United are clear that this price must be paid, or Rashford doesn’t join Hansi Flick’s champions permanently. That’s the right stance to take because he is undoubtedly worth more than this.

Rashford views his Old Trafford career as over, and it’s a sad way to end things. At his best, he had been the Reds’ talisman and sits on 138 goals and 79 assists in 426 games.

Rashford regrets

Carrick is the ideal manager for him to play under, given their previous relationship at the club. He knows the Englishman and what makes him thrive.

Flick has got the best out of Rashford, with the forward posting 14 goals and as many assists in 48 games this season. But he isn’t a guaranteed starter, and he’s quite happy to rotate with the likes of Ferran Torres and Raphinha.

A return to United would allow the club to prioritise their midfield overhaul rather than also pursue a new left winger. Having him compete with Matheus Cunha for a starting berth and even offer Benjamin Sesko competition could have been a real boost for Carrick.

If Carrick is able to bring the Red Devils back to it’s glory days, Rashford will probably look back with regret. He is a player who, like Bruno Fernandes, deserves to be winning major trophies at the Theatre of Dreams.
