Manchester United winger Amad has left the 2026 World Cup with a goal, a record and a clearer return path for Michael Carrick’s pre-season plans.
Ivory Coast were beaten 2-1 by Norway in the round of 32 on Tuesday, June 30, with Antonio Nusa opening the scoring before Amad levelled in the 74th minute. ESPN’s match report credited the United forward with a left-footed equaliser inside the penalty area before Erling Haaland struck the late winner.
United responded publicly after the defeat, telling Amad to “hold your head high” after his World Cup campaign ended. That message reflected a tournament which still strengthened his Old Trafford case, even if Ivory Coast’s run ended earlier than he wanted.
Amad Exit Gives Carrick A Firm Return Date
The disappointment for Amad is obvious. Legit.ng reported that his strike made him the first Ivory Coast player to score in a World Cup knockout match, a personal landmark that deserved more than elimination.
For United, though, the timing now matters. Instead of waiting deep into July, Carrick can plan around Amad’s recovery window, post-tournament break and staged return to Carrington before the final phase of pre-season.
That matters because United already have a crowded attacking picture. As ReadManUtd recently covered, Amad’s World Cup run had already become a major Manchester United storyline before the Norway tie.
His knockout goal only sharpens that discussion. Amad should return as a genuine first-team weapon, not just a rotation option waiting for spare minutes.
The next United decision is whether Carrick protects his return or accelerates him straight into the wide-forward battle. Either way, Norway’s late winner has handed United clarity sooner than expected.
