Marcus Rashford And Kobbie Mainoo Reach World Cup Last 16 With England

Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are through to the 2026 World Cup last 16 after England beat DR Congo 2-1 in Atlanta.

Manchester United confirmed that Rashford and Mainoo progressed with England after Harry Kane scored twice late on to rescue Thomas Tuchel’s side from a major scare.

United’s official update also noted the wider Old Trafford thread, with former Reds Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe involved for DR Congo.

Reuters reported that England trailed for more than an hour after Brian Cipenga’s seventh-minute goal before Kane struck in the 75th and 86th minutes.

For United, the story is not just England’s survival. It is the growing compression around Michael Carrick’s summer planning.

Carrick Gets A Sharper Rashford And Mainoo Load Call

Rashford has now guaranteed himself at least one more knockout fixture before any post-tournament rest window can begin. Mainoo’s continued presence also keeps one of United’s most important midfielders inside England’s high-pressure environment.

That matters at Carrington, where United’s early pre-season work will already need to account for staggered returns and fitness protection.

Read Man Utd had already covered how Rashford and Tuanzebe’s England v DR Congo reunion brought a United academy subplot to the World Cup. The difference now is consequence.

England have survived, Rashford’s workload continues, and Carrick’s return plan has another live variable to manage.

Mainoo’s situation is just as important. Read Man Utd has also analysed how Kobbie Mainoo’s England wait gave United a midfield reminder before pre-season, and the last-16 progression keeps that issue open.

England now move on to face Mexico in Mexico City. That is a far heavier physical and emotional test than United would ideally want for two players central to their domestic reset.

Carrick will welcome the tournament experience. He will also know every extra knockout minute makes United’s pre-season management more delicate.
