Manchester United have been handed another clear midfield-market signal after Manchester City confirmed their record move for Elliot Anderson.
Sky Sports reports that City have completed a £116m deal to sign the England midfielder from Nottingham Forest, making him the most expensive British player.
Anderson, 23, is currently with England at the World Cup, with the final formalities of the move due to follow after international duty.
The deal matters at Old Trafford because Anderson had repeatedly sat in the wider Premier League midfield conversation. talkSPORT reported earlier this summer that Manchester United held interest, although they were not expected to enter a bidding war.
For Michael Carrick, the issue is less about missing one player than the speed of the market around him.
United have already been linked with several midfield options, with Manchester Evening News reporting that Alex Scott is now a leading target and Aurelien Tchouameni also admired.
Anderson’s fee reinforces how costly Premier League-proven midfielders have become. It also shows how quickly rivals can move when a player reaches the top of the market.
If United want another athletic No.8 alongside their existing summer midfield work, they cannot let every shortlist name drift into an auction.
City have set the benchmark. United now need to prove they can move with control, not reaction.
