Manchester United have opened direct talks with West Ham United over a move for Crysencio Summerville.
Ben Jacobs reports that club-to-club contact is now underway, with United exploring a deal for the Dutch winger.
The talks are described as exploratory at this stage, but Summerville is high in United’s thinking as Michael Carrick looks to add more speed and direct threat to his attack.
Sky Sports reported earlier this week that Summerville had emerged as a top left-wing target for United, with his situation also linked to Marcus Rashford’s future at Old Trafford.
That now appears to have moved on.
Why United Want Summerville
Summerville’s appeal is clear.
He gives United a natural wide profile, carries the ball aggressively and can attack space in a way Carrick’s squad still needs. He also has Premier League experience and has been involved with the Netherlands at the World Cup.
talkSPORT reports that United have initiated discussions with West Ham, with Summerville remaining one of the club’s main wide options.
The same report says the deal could still depend on Rashford’s situation, which remains unresolved after his loan spell away from United.
That is the key point.
United can admire Summerville, but Carrick’s forward planning still depends on who leaves. Rashford’s future, Jadon Sancho’s position and the wider attacking depth all affect how hard United push.
Read Man Utd has already covered how United’s interest in Ismaila Sarr gives Carrick another forward option to weigh up. Summerville now looks like another live route in the same area of the squad.
West Ham Will Not Sell Cheaply
West Ham’s position will decide how quickly this develops.
The Hammers have already sold Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham and are trying to build a Championship promotion squad under Nuno Espirito Santo. They do not need another major attacking exit unless the fee works.
The Guardian reported that Fernandes’ sale brought West Ham a club-record £85m fee, giving the club some financial room after relegation.
That may strengthen their stance on Summerville.
United need a winger, but they cannot let another Premier League target become an inflated auction. West Ham have a player with pace, age and top-flight experience. They will know that profile carries value.
For Carrick, the attraction is obvious. Summerville would give United a more explosive left-sided option and help stretch games in transition.
The harder part is the price.
Talks are now underway. The next step is whether exploratory contact becomes a formal bid.
