Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot face Spain in Dallas tonight, with Manchester United’s World Cup workload picture moving into another important phase.
Portugal meet Spain in the last 16 at AT&T Stadium, with a quarter-final place at stake. Manchester United confirmed before the tournament that Fernandes and Dalot were both named in Roberto Martinez’s Portugal squad.
The challenge is difficult. Opta Analyst gives Spain a 48.6% win probability, compared with Portugal’s 25.6%. Spain have also kept clean sheets in their first four matches of the tournament.
United Pair Face Spain’s Clean-Sheet Run
Fernandes’ role will be central if Portugal are to break Spain down. Martinez’s side needed late drama to beat Croatia in the previous round, with Reuters reporting that Cristiano Ronaldo and Goncalo Ramos scored in a 2-1 win.
Dalot also faces a major defensive test. Spain’s wide rotations, led by Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal, have made them one of the most balanced sides left in the competition. Portugal will need disciplined full-back defending, not just recovery speed.
For United, the wider issue is timing. Every Portugal round adds strain to Michael Carrick’s summer planning. Fernandes remains the captain and key creative reference point, while Dalot gives United important defensive experience.
If Portugal go out, Carrick gets two senior players back earlier. If they go through, United keep two leaders inside the most demanding rhythm of the tournament.
That is the trade-off. United will welcome the level Fernandes and Dalot are playing at. Their return will still need careful management before pre-season sharpens.
