Manchester United have told Atalanta they are pulling back from a deal for Ederson, although the move may not be completely dead yet.
Fabrizio Romano reports United have informed Atalanta the transfer is “off and considered as collapsed” after the midfielder’s second medical raised fresh concerns. The Serie A club are said to believe Ederson is fully fit and ready to return to their squad.
The development follows a sharp change in a deal that had looked close. Sky Sports previously reported United had agreed a package worth £34m plus £3.8m in add-ons, with Ederson expected to sign a four-year contract.
ReadManUtd covered why United ordered a second medical for Ederson on Thursday, and that caution now looks justified.
Carrick Waits As United Weigh Next Move
The picture is still slightly mixed. Florian Plettenberg reports that sources close to United are not calling the transfer 100 per cent dead, even if the process has become difficult.
That leaves Carrick in an awkward position. United wanted Ederson to be a major part of their midfield rebuild, but the club cannot ignore a medical concern if they believe the risk is too high.
There is at least one piece of progress elsewhere. Andrey Santos is still expected to arrive from Chelsea, while Roma midfielder Manu Kone has been linked as a possible alternative if the Ederson move collapses completely.
For now, United’s message is clear enough. If the medical doubts remain, they are prepared to walk away.
