Michael Carrick has singled out Jacob Devaney for praise after Manchester United’s academy players impressed during the second half of their 1-0 defeat against Wrexham.
Carrick replaced his entire starting XI at half-time in Helsinki and introduced a team made up exclusively of academy graduates.
The younger side controlled possession for long periods and produced a more energetic performance, although United could not find an equaliser.
Devaney was used in an unfamiliar centre-back position alongside Dan Armer. The midfielder handled the physical challenge presented by experienced Wrexham striker Kieffer Moore and emerged as one of United’s strongest performers.
Carrick backs Devaney for more Man Utd minutes
Speaking in his official post-match interview, Carrick praised Devaney’s confidence, communication and willingness to accept responsibility.
The 19-year-old spent part of last season on loan at St Mirren and has returned with greater senior experience.
Carrick confirmed that the display had improved Devaney’s prospects of receiving further minutes during pre-season. United travel to Norway next for Friday’s friendly against Rosenborg.
Tyler Fletcher also earned praise after captaining the academy side following the interval.
The midfielder had only recently returned from the World Cup with Scotland but asked to rejoin training without taking an extended break. Carrick felt Fletcher led the team with composure despite his disrupted summer.
United’s younger players created more pressure after half-time, with Ethan Wheatley and Shea Lacey both forcing saves.
As Read Man Utd examined after the defeat, the academy group’s urgency provided one of the main positives from an otherwise frustrating opening friendly.
Devaney and Fletcher have now placed themselves firmly in Carrick’s thoughts before the next stage of United’s preparations.
