Manchester United defender Tyler Fredricson has been left out of the squad facing Wrexham ahead of an expected permanent move away from Old Trafford.
The 21-year-old has not travelled to Helsinki for United’s opening pre-season friendly on Saturday. Michael Carrick has instead selected several other academy players as he begins assessing his squad before the new campaign.
According to BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone, Fredricson’s absence is linked to his transfer situation rather than an injury. A move to another European club is currently viewed as a likely outcome.
No agreement or destination has yet been confirmed. However, his omission suggests talks over a permanent exit may now be progressing.
Fredricson set to leave Manchester United
Fredricson joined United’s academy as a youngster and was involved throughout the club’s successful 2021/22 FA Youth Cup campaign. Illness ruled him out of the final against Nottingham Forest.
The centre-back later became United’s 254th academy graduate when he made his senior debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 2025. He has since remained around the first-team group but has struggled to establish a regular role.
Carrick has several centre-back options available, including Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven. Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt also remain important members of the defensive group when fully fit.
A permanent transfer would give Fredricson the chance to secure regular senior football at a crucial stage of his development. United could also protect their position by negotiating a sell-on clause or future matching rights.
His expected departure follows another recent academy exit after highly rated goalkeeper Darlington Osuchukwu rejected a new Manchester United contract.
Fredricson’s absence against Wrexham now points towards his time at Old Trafford ending before the Premier League season begins.
