Fabrizio Romano has dismissed reports linking Manchester United with a €55million move for Barcelona midfielder Gavi, describing the transfer speculation as “completely false”.
Spanish media reports had claimed United were preparing an opening package worth €40m plus €15m in add-ons for the 22-year-old.
The same speculation suggested Michael Carrick preferred Gavi to Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga as United searched for another addition in the centre of the pitch.
Romano has now poured cold water on those claims.
The transfer journalist reports that Gavi is not expected to leave Barcelona, with both the player and the Catalan club happy with the current situation. There could even be discussions over his contract again in the coming months.
That stance makes the prospect of an imminent United bid extremely unlikely.
Fabrizio Romano dismisses Man Utd Gavi links
Gavi would have represented another high-profile name in a midfield search which has generated considerable speculation throughout the summer.
United have already strengthened Carrick’s options with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, but another addition remains possible.
As ReadManUtd examined on Monday, United’s £85m midfield rebuild still has one obvious area to address, particularly if Carrick wants greater athleticism and defensive protection alongside his existing options.
Tielemans has already made an encouraging impression, with ReadManUtd assessing why the Belgian could prove United’s signing of the summer.
Gavi, however, does not appear to be the player who will complete that rebuild.
Barcelona are already in a strong contractual position. The club officially announced in January 2025 that Gavi had signed terms keeping him at the club until June 2030.
Romano’s latest update goes further by making clear that neither side is currently looking for an exit.
United may still pursue another midfielder before the transfer window closes, but the reported €55m move for Gavi can now be removed from Carrick’s list of credible possibilities.
