Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, with a package worth around £65million now reportedly being discussed between the clubs.
David Ornstein reports that United are working towards an agreement for the Cameroon international as Michael Carrick pushes to add another midfielder to his squad.
United’s proposal is understood to be worth around £60m plus a further £5m in add-ons.
That remains below Brighton’s valuation of the 22-year-old, but all parties are reportedly working towards finding a solution.
It represents a major acceleration in a transfer saga that has developed rapidly over the past week.
Carlos Baleba transfer takes major Man Utd step
Baleba has been monitored by United for some time, but the cost of signing him had previously threatened to make a deal difficult.
ReadManUtd reported on 14 August that Brighton could consider offers around the £60m to £65m mark, with Newcastle also showing interest at that stage.
Crucially, United had not launched a formal move at the time.
That situation has now changed significantly if Ornstein’s latest update leads to an agreement.
Carrick has already added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to his midfield this summer, but another central option has remained under consideration.
ReadManUtd revealed on Tuesday that midfield was still an area United wanted to address, even as left-back emerged as the club’s immediate recruitment focus.
Baleba would give Carrick something different.
His athleticism, ball-winning ability and capacity to cover ground would add greater physical protection to a midfield which has already received significant technical improvement through Tielemans and Santos.
The financial picture also makes the development particularly interesting.
United entered Wednesday with their current net transfer spend sitting at an 11-year low, leaving scope for another significant investment before the window closes.
A final agreement has not yet been reached and Brighton’s valuation still needs to be satisfied.
But United have now moved considerably beyond monitoring Baleba.
With a package worth up to £65m reportedly on the table and all sides working towards a solution, one of Carrick’s long-term midfield targets could finally be approaching Old Trafford.
