Manchester United youngster Ethan Wheatley has agreed to join Lincoln City on loan for the season, with the striker now set for a move deemed important for his development.
According to Football Insider, Ethan Wheatley will complete a medical before finalising the switch to the Championship club. It will give the 20-year-old a chance to test himself in England’s second tier after spending last season in League One.
While Everton and Schalke have been interested in the 20-year-old previously, Lincoln City have beaten them for the loan move.
Ethan Wheatley gets chance to step up
Wheatley enjoyed loan spells with Northampton Town and Bradford City last season, although his numbers in front of goal were modest. He scored three times in 37 appearances, but United still see enough in him to continue backing his progress.
The forward has been with Manchester United throughout his youth career and first made his mark with the Under-18s in 2022. He scored 14 goals for the U-18s before moving to the U-21s, where he added another 14 goals to his name.
His opportunities with the first team have been limited so far. Ethan Wheatley has made four first-team appearances, with three under Erik ten Hag including his debut against Sheffield United in April 2024 and another under Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The Championship side have lost their opening two matches against Middlesbrough and Portsmouth, so Wheatley could quickly find himself under pressure to make an impact once his move is completed.
Wheatley’s current contract runs until 2028. Manchester United see him as the future of the club and remain invested in his development.
