Manchester United have ‘no chance’ of signing Lewis Hall

Manchester United have been given a very clear response after their reported interest in Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall.

There are only eight days left in the transfer window, and Manchester United are still looking for another option at left-back. Luke Shaw started the opening Premier League game against Hull City, but his display in the 2-0 defeat did little to ease the concerns around the position.

Lewis Hall, meanwhile, caught the eye during Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool. That performance came at an interesting time for Manchester United, who are believed to be considering several options for the position.

Schmeichel asks Newcastle boss about Lewis-Hall

The subject came up in an exchange involving Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel after the Newcastle game.

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle was speaking to Viaplay about his plans for the remaining days of the window. The discussion turned towards possible incomings and outgoings at St James’ Park.

Jaissle said: “I think it will be a stressful period for the sporting director. We have some needs, definitely.”

When asked which positions Newcastle might strengthen, the German coach opted not to reveal too much.

“What positions? Because you asked… I was about to tell you but I’ll keep it a secret! If you bring players in, maybe there will be also some players out.”

That was when Schmeichel decided to bring Manchester United into the conversation.

“We’re [Manchester United] looking at your left-back.”

Jaissle initially appeared surprised by the comment.

“Pardon?”

Schmeichel then made his point even clearer.

“We. We’re looking at your left-back.”

The Newcastle manager’s response was short and decisive.

“No chance. No chance.”

Schmeichel could only laugh at the answer before replying: “No chance? Well, you heard it here! No chance.”

Manchester United still need a left-back

Whether Schmeichel was speaking from genuine knowledge of United’s plans or simply putting Jaissle on the spot, his comments have added an interesting twist to the Lewis Hall transfer.

Manchester United’s need for another left-back is hardly a secret after the opening-day defeat. Luke Shaw started against Hull and was at the receiving end of criticism by Wayne Rooney for a lacklustre performance.

Gary Neville has always stressed on Manchester United on signing a new left back. Neville thinks Michael Carrick’s squad still has obvious gaps to cover.

Manchester United have already made significant changes elsewhere this summer. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have arrived, while Carlos Baleba is closing in on a move after completing his medical.

Hall would certainly fit the profile of a player United could look at, but Jaissle’s response suggests Newcastle have no intention of making negotiations easy.
