Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer is joining West Bromwich Albion on a permanent deal worth up to £7.6million.
United have accepted West Brom’s proposal for the 22-year-old, who has also agreed personal terms ahead of returning to The Hawthorns.
Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic reports that United will receive a guaranteed £3m fee, with performance-related add-ons capable of increasing the overall package to £7.6m.
Crucially, United have also negotiated a substantial 40 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Toby Collyer set for permanent Man Utd exit
Collyer’s permanent departure comes after West Brom and Hull City both showed interest in signing him before the transfer deadline.
He spent the first half of last season on loan at West Brom before returning to United in January and subsequently joining Hull for the remainder of the campaign.
United’s official player profile confirms Collyer originally joined the club from Brighton in 2022 before progressing through the academy and making his senior debut in the 2024 Community Shield.
West Brom had already opened negotiations over bringing him back to The Hawthorns earlier this month, with Whitwell previously reporting that discussions were at an early stage.
Those talks have now resulted in a permanent agreement.
The structure is notable from United’s perspective.
A £3m guaranteed fee appears relatively modest for a 22-year-old academy midfielder, but the add-ons could more than double that figure and the 40% sell-on clause gives United significant protection if Collyer’s value rises at West Brom.
Man Utd midfield overhaul opens door for Collyer exit
Collyer’s route into Michael Carrick‘s midfield had become increasingly difficult following United’s extensive summer recruitment.
Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have all arrived during a major rebuild of the position, leaving Collyer well down the pecking order.
A permanent move therefore gives him the opportunity to play regularly at a club he already knows.
Collyer’s previous West Brom loan was disrupted by a calf injury, although he still made 12 Championship appearances before returning to Manchester in January.
The Baggies have now moved ahead of Hull to bring him back permanently.
For United, the immediate return may only be £3m, but the potential £7.6m package and unusually large sell-on percentage mean the club could benefit considerably again if Collyer’s career develops at The Hawthorns.
