Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes could be back at full fitness for Portugal’s UEFA Nations League clash with Denmark on Thursday, with head coach Jorge Jesus hopeful the midfielder will be ready to return.
Fernandes missed Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway on Sunday after Jesus decided not to take a risk with his captain. The decision came after Fernandes played in Portugal’s opening game of the international break, a 1-0 victory over Wales, despite carrying a problem.
Jesus had already explained that Fernandes was dealing with an issue, but the Portugal boss now appears confident that the Manchester United midfielder can recover in time for the Denmark fixture.
The United captain has spoken with Jesus about his condition, and the plan is for him to make an immediate return as Portugal continue their Nations League campaign.
Patrick Dorgu ruled out for Denmark
While Fernandes could return, Manchester United teammate Patrick Dorgu will not be involved against Denmark.
The 21-year-old had featured in six of United’s seven games this season before starting Denmark’s 2-0 win over Wales on Sunday. However, his night was cut short after just 30 minutes when he appeared to suffer an injury.
Denmark head coach Brian Riemer confirmed after the match that Dorgu would leave the squad and return to his club.
“He has an injury and has to go home. A new one has to be called in,” Riemer told TV2, as quoted by Manchester United Official Website.
Dorgu will now return to Manchester United for further assessment, while the club will hope Fernandes can complete his recovery and be available for Portugal’s meeting with Denmark.
