Louis Saha believes Manchester United made a mistake by failing to sign a creative replacement for Mason Mount during the summer transfer window.
Manchester United added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to their midfield for a combined £85 million, giving Michael Carrick more options in the middle of the pitch. Carlos Baleba subsequently joined after a big money move from Brighton as well. But Saha feels the club should also have targeted a more influential playmaker capable of changing games.
The former United striker believes Mason Mount has not shown enough to become the player who can share the creative burden with Bruno Fernandes.
Saha questions United’s summer transfer decisions
“Manchester United could have signed another playmaker to play as the second striker or a more creative midfielder who is a better option than Mason Mount to replace him,” Saha said as quoted by Roundtable.
“He is another good player but he is not someone who is going to accelerate a game for Manchester United.”
Mason Mount has struggled with injuries since arriving from Chelsea in 2023 for £60 million, making it difficult for him to build any real consistency at Old Trafford.
Saha also questioned whether United gave Michael Carrick enough support in the transfer market. He accepts the club were trying to avoid the kind of expensive mistakes made in previous windows, but feels that approach may have gone too far.
“I think that was the wrong mentality for where the team is at,” Saha added.
United also have concerns at left-back, particularly after Patrick Dorgu returned from international duty with Denmark carrying an injury. Though, Louis Saha believes United need players capable of helping them break down opponents rather than simply adding more depth.
