Scott McTominay could be heading back to the Premier League, with Manchester United among the clubs linked with the Napoli midfielder ahead of a possible move in 2027.
Scott McTominay left Manchester United for Napoli in 2024 and quickly became a key figure in Italy. His first season was particularly impressive, with 12 league goals and six assists as Napoli won the Serie A title. He followed the season with another 10 league goals and three assists last season.
This campaign has been more difficult. Scott McTominay has been dealing with a heart problem and underwent surgery as part of his recovery, limiting his involvement with Napoli.
Reports now suggest his time in Naples could be coming to an end.
Manchester United keeping tabs on McTominay
Journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that McTominay’s agent still has strong Premier League connections and has held talks with several clubs, including United. Aston Villa were also understood to have approached the midfielder during the summer.
The possibility of a return to Old Trafford is certainly an interesting one, given how much McTominay has changed since leaving. He was often criticised during his United career, but his performances in Italy have added goals and attacking influence to his game.
Napoli are reportedly reluctant to offer the kind of wages McTominay would want as he approaches his 30s. The Italian club is believed to value him at between € 25 million and € 30 million. His contract faces a major hurdle as his salary could still prove a stumbling block for any potential suitors.
A return to England is far from guaranteed, but McTominay’s situation is worth watching. United know exactly what he can offer, and his development in Serie A has made him a rather different player from the one who left Old Trafford.
