Can Carlos Baleba Make His Manchester United Debut Against Tottenham?

Carlos Baleba could finally make his long-awaited Manchester United debut when Michael Carrick’s side returns to Premier League action against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The midfielder joined Manchester United from Brighton & Hove Albion in a massive £70 million summer move. He arrived at Old Trafford carrying an injury picked up during pre-season with his former club. That delayed his first appearance for his new side.

There has been some encouragement during the international break, though. Baleba featured in a behind-closed-doors match against Lausanne-Sport last week, as he continues to build his fitness.

Carlos Baleba set to be fifth Carrick debutant

Carlos Baleba was also an unused substitute during United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham in their last Premier League outing, suggesting he is getting closer to being involved competitively.

A debut against Tottenham would make him the fifth player to receive his first appearance under Carrick, as per the Manchester United official site. Tyler Fletcher made his debut against Spurs last season, while Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow have all made their debuts this term.

Saturday’s game could therefore provide another opportunity for Carrick to introduce one of his most anticipated summer additions.

Baleba’s return would also come at an important time for United. The midfielder was signed for a significant fee and is expected to add a much-needed balance in the middle of the pitch. After spending much of the opening weeks recovering from injury, a place in the squad against Tottenham would represent another step forward.

Michael Carrick is under pressure of his own after recording just one win against Ipswich so far. United sit 12th in the table while Tottenham are 20th in the table. A win at Old Trafford would ease the pressure for Michael Carrick.

Whether Carrick feels Baleba is ready to start remains to be seen, but his appearance from the bench now looks like a realistic possibility.
