Manchester United will battle it out with Chelsea over the £48m summer signing of Luka Modric, according to the Daily Express.
Both United and Chelsea were interested in landing the Croatian back in 2011, when the former Tottenham player moved to Real Madrid in a deal worth £30m; now, Jose Mourinho wants to bring the creative midfielder to London after doubts have been cast over the futures of Ramires and John Obi Mikel.
Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal has indentified Modric, 29, as the perfect man to fill into his midfield. Whilst Chelsea have Fabregas, United’s midfielders have still yet to cement a place with the Dutchman. Modric, a creative midfielder, is seen as a player that could really sort out his midfield. Whilst Paul Pogba, 21, is an alternative, United have baulked at Juventus’ £77m asking price and see Modric as a much cheaper, and realistic option.
In his 3 years, he’s won the Champions League, Copa Del Rey, Supercopa de España, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, but, life in Spain isn’t going as well for Modric’s wife; The Express explain how Modric could opt for a return to the Premier League, after his wife has failed to adapt to life in Spain.
Speaking to French newspaper Le10Sport, FIFA Agent Francois Gallardo revealed:
“Modric is the engine of Real Madrid, but the problem is his wife who did not fit into Madrid in Spain”.
Whilst being a fan favourite at Madrid after his tough start, Modric, could be a real coup for United should he chose to leave the La Liga leaders. An obstacle would be convincing Real Madrid to part with one of their stars, given his contract still has until 2018 to run.
