Spaniard speaks out on De Gea

Juan Mata has described David De Gea as “one of the best goalkeepers in the world”, in an interview with Marca.

De Gea has been heavily linked with a return to his homeland with Real Madrid reportedly preparing a bid for the goalkeeper, who was voted as Manchester United’s Player of the Year for the second year running, and his future at Old Trafford looks far from certain.

He has a year left to run on his current contract at United and is supposedly deciding his future at the club. When pressed about his international colleague, Mata said, “Lots of people ask me about him. He’s a friend and I want him to be happy”. He also added that “from a selfish point of view, I would want to have him in my team”, which appears to throw doubt over the possibility of De Gea staying in Manchester.

Mata, who enjoyed a terrific second half to the 2014/15 season, also spoke of his joy in playing for Manchester United, saying, “I try to wear the tag with pride and responsibility”. He, like most supporters, will be hoping De Gea decides to wear the United tag again next season.
