Contrary to recent reports, Louis Van Gaal is determined to bring in Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin together, rather than one or the other as was thought up until now.
Samuel Luckhurst of Manchester Evening News says that Louis van Gaal is confident that the can announce the signing of French international, Morgan Schneiderlin, as early as next week. Manchester United have already agreed personal terms with the midfielder and it now is simply a case of agreeing a fee with Southampton.
However, with Blind excelling in other areas of the pitch and Herrera and Fellaini now preferring attacking midfield roles rather than defensive roles, the United hierarchy is concerned about whether Schneiderlin and Carrick provide enough in the defensive midfield role, in a season which will be busier due to European matches, than last.
Carrick struggled to cope with playing a full season without European fixtures last year, picking up niggling injuries – and United have therefore identified their second target in midfield, Bayern’s midfield general, Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Schweinsteiger may not be as unreal a target for United as some media aspects are claiming. After all it was LVG himself that converted the German into a defensive midfielder during his time at Bayern.
The prospect of constant first team football may also be an inviting thought for Schweinsteiger who has recently found himself side-lined at the German club by new arrivals.
Schweinsteiger is currently in England with his tennis-player girlfriend Ana Ivanovic ahead of Wimbledon, yet United could use the opportunity to discuss personal terms with the German.
However in the past the German has refused to comment on a move to Manchester, simply stating “I have a contract until 2016”.
If United can pull off these two signings, the squad will benefit massively and with an additional defender, possibly push for the title.
