David de Gea may have returned to Manchester United for pre-season training this morning, but that does not mean he’ll be around forever. If he is to leave, Louis van Gaal can rely on Victor Valdes and Anders Lindegaard fairly comfortably, but it appears that he wants to bring in an alternative first choice stopper – competition is healthy after all.
One potential candidate is Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. The Uruguayan international is experienced at 29 years old. He played in every match for his country at the 2010 & 2014 World Cups, the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2011 and recent 2015 Copa America tournaments. He has been capped a total of 72 times for Uruguay.
According to Turkish publication Vatan, Manchester United have sent Galatasaray an opening bid of €35 million (£24.8m) for the goalkeeper, who arrived in the Super Lig from Lazio in 2011.
With Hugo Lloris, Bernd Leno and Asmir Begovic all touted as targets for Ed Woodward and co, there is quite a pool of potential first-choice goalkeepers for United this season. However, Vatan claim that Muslera tops the list for the Red Devils.
His reactions and reflexes are very impressive, similarly to De Gea; however his distribution doesn’t match up to that of United’s current number one, who’s long and short passing and vision are arguably the best in the world for a goalkeeper.
