Forget Thomas Muller, Karim Benzema and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Manchester United could be signing a striker from Barnet, according to ESPN.
The player in question is 17-year-old Matt Stevens. He may be almost entirely unknown, but playing for his side’s under-18 outfit in 2014-15, he scored more than 50 goals.
Naturally, this has sparked huge interest as clubs look to add promising talents to their youth set-ups. To name Premier League clubs, both Crystal Palace and Swansea have had bids rejected already, but it is safe to assume that an offer from Old Trafford may carry more weight for both Barnet FC and for the player himself.
No official approach has been made by United, but ESPN claim that the Red Devils are watching the player closely and keeping tabs on his situation with regard to a possible transfer; alongside rivals Manchester City.
If he were to come to United and reproduce such a marvellous season as the one just gone, Stevens would not doubt be joining the likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Callum Gribbin in gradual promotion to the Reds’ under-21 team.
