Manchester United have on Saturday evening confirmed on their official club website that long-serving centre-back Jonny Evans has left the club.
27-year-old Evans, who is a Northern Ireland international, has joined fellow Premier League club, West Bromwich Albion, for an undisclosed fee. The Baggies have confirmed that it is a four-year deal on their own website, in a statement regarding the transfer.
Evans made his Manchester United debut in a League Cup tie against Coventry City in 2007, when he replaced Gerard Pique with 12 minutes of the game left. He was just two appearances shy of having turned out 200 times for the Red Devils as a player who was until today the club’s second longest-standing player, after captain Wayne Rooney.
Evans has been playing for his national side since 2006, when he was just 18. He leaves Old Trafford having won three Premier League titles, two League Cups, three Community Shields and a FIFA Club World Cup. He also won the Championship when on loan at Sunderland, whom he helped back to the Premier League in 2006-07. He was not in United’s 2007-08 Champions League squad, who won the competition after overcoming Chelsea in a tense final in Moscow.
West Brom boss Tony Pulis had this to say:
“Jonny brings a lot of experience and will be a big player for us – he’s a player I’ve been watching for some time – We are delighted to have him on board.”
United play West Brom at Old Trafford on Saturday 7th November at 15:00 GMT.
